Dr. Robert Warren Sucsy

Dr. Robert Warren Sucsy, 94, of Blue Hill, died peacefully at home on Jan. 9, 2019. He was attended in his final days by Corinne Byers Sucsy, his loving wife of 30 years. He served the community of Blue Hill as both physician and friend beginning in 1975 to his retirement from medicine in 2012.

Dr. Sucsy was born to Arthur and Viola Sucsy on Feb. 21, 1924, in the city of Brooklyn, N.Y. His mother and father were the children of Hungarian and German immigrants and he and his two brothers were the first in their family to attend college. His fondest memories of his childhood were traveling on family fishing trips to Maine. The family moved to Valley Stream, Long Island, where he graduated from Valley Stream High School and was captain and quarterback of the football team. He was also an accomplished wrestler. He left Valley Stream to attend Amherst College in 1942.

His college career was interrupted by world events and he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He deployed to the Philippines as an ensign with Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 33. His PT boat was poised for the invasion of Japan in the summer of 1945 when the war ended.

Returning from the war, Dr. Sucsy earned a medical degree from the Long Island College of Medicine in 1951. During this period he married Grace Evelyn Valentine of Valley Stream. He served as a doctor at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in 1952 and Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1953.

He moved to East Hampton, N.Y., where he practiced medicine and raised his four children from 1954 to 1975. He is fondly remembered there as a dedicated and tireless family doctor at a time when the profession made house calls.

When the last of his children left home in 1975, he pursued his lifelong ambition to move to Maine. He first lived at Peters Cove, Blue Hill, with his second wife, Judy Morris. Shortly after moving to his Billings Pond farm, he married Corinne Byers, a longtime resident of Blue Hill in 1988. For the last 30 years she had been his wife, companion, farm-hand and finally caregiver.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Arthur and Richard. He is survived by his four children, Dr. Robert James Sucsy and his wife, Debra, of Newport, R.I., Mark Conrad Sucsy and his wife, Michelle, of East Hampton, N.Y., Peter Valentine Sucsy and his wife, Eleta, of Keystone Heights, Fla., and Maral Sucsy Pugh and her husband, Daniel, of South Dartmouth, Mass.; nine grandchildren, Abigail, Robert, Kestral, Anna and Kai Sucsy, Daniel and Peter Pugh, Marielle (Sucsy) Ingram and Louisa (Pugh) Engle; and three great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Edith Engle and Morgan Ingram.

Dr. Sucsy was an avid outdoorsman and was never more at home than sitting by a fire, far from any town, and in the company of good friends. He left the woods, as this world, better than he found it.

A memorial service will be planned for a future date. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 701, Blue Hill, ME 04614. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Blue Hill Public Library, 5 Parker Point Road, Blue Hill, ME 04614.
