Nancy Snowdon Coleman Cummings passed away peacefully at home on January 4th after a
short and gentle decline with both of her children nearby.
Nancy was a fourth-generation Kennebunk native and a proud member of the KHS Class of 1949. She grew up on Dane Street and spent much of her time in her grandfather EC Snowdon’s barn, where she took much pleasure caring for his harness racing horses. After attending Lesley College, she was an elementary school teacher in Newton, MA, where she met the love of her life, John Cummings, and together they returned to Kennebunk in 1960.
She was also one of the old-timers at Kennebunk Pond, having spent her summers there since the mid-40s when her father Hank Coleman bought a camp alongside several other Kennebunk families; their place, “Dunwirkin,” hosted decades of gatherings of pond and town friends, as well as the Kennebunk Fire Department and the Kennebunk Rotary Club.
Nancy was a wonderful mother, offering clear direction and fun activities—the animal-shaped birthday cakes were a childhood highlight! She volunteered locally on the cancer drive, school elections, high school reunions, as a driver for FISH, and spent many years assisting Leo Martin at Park Street School. She and John enjoyed many nourishing trips around the US and Caribbean during the last 25 years of their long and blessed life.
Nancy is now reunited with John, who passed away in September, and is survived by her son Jim, her daughter Judy Hoag and her husband Dale, and her four grandchildren Anasha Cummings, Ashley Poirier and her husband Tyler, Chase Carrington, and Rosalinda Cummings.
Nancy, John, Jim, and Judy would like to offer big thanks to her dedicated caregivers who were both a great help and much comfort for us all over the past several months.
A family graveside service will be held in the spring. If you wish to honor her memory, donations may be directed to the Brick Store Museum, 117 Main St, Kennebunk, ME 04043.
